2009 - Replacing projector bulb

Well after 5 years and 2200 hours of use my original projector bulb burned out. My projector (Sony VPL-HS20) was out of action for about 3 weeks while I researched projector bulbs. Bulbs are not cheap. The bulb I needed, LMP-H180, was listed anywhere from $300 to $400. There were a few cheaper off-brand bulbs available. The price caused me to research what my alternatives where. It turns out you can remove just the bulb portion of the lamp assembly and replace it. The new bulb portion is about $100 from some place in China. The problem is that the bulb portion contains mercury, requires you to cut the old one out, and to high temperature cement the new one in place. If you dont get it inserted into the reflector at the right distance it wont be as bright. Also, if you leave a fingerprint or dust on the bulb it could explode. For the first time every I decided to pay a premium, skip the project, and just buy a new bulb assembly.
