xs1100 - side view mirrors and starter button
I got a new master cylinder for the xs1100 but could not get my old rectangular mirror off the old reservoir. So for the last few weeks I have been driving around without a right side rear view mirror. I ordered some new round mirrors and fitted them. They actually stick out a little farther than the stock rectangular mirrors which makes it easier to see around my shoulders while riding. I fitted the same mirrors to my xs650.
Recently my starter button fell off. I reverted to starting the bike with the tip of a screw driver. This worked fine for a couple days until all of a sudden my bike started making a strange whining noise while on the highway. I couldnt figure it out, the whining continued no matter the speed I was traveling, whether I was accelerating or braking, regardless of the gear, even if the clutch was in. I was truely puzzeled. What was more worrying was that when I tried to kill the engine with the clutch in while moving (I know, not a great idea on the highway but that whining noise was freaking me out), I could not kill the engine. I hit the kill switch and the engine just kept on running. WTF?
After driving for about 2 miles I like this I finally noticed that the spring that usually sits behind the starter button had shifted. It was now making contact between the two start button points. The whining noise was my starter running. I pushed the spring back in with my finger and voila, the noise stopped and I was able to kill the bike via the switch.
I cant imagine that 2 miles of highway speed was good for the starter. Thankfully that same day my new starter button arrived by mail. I fitted it and all is good again.
