ts250 - upgrading to 12 volts, installing Trail Tech Voyager, and 12 volt lighting
My brake light broke. This has happened too many times before. I decided to upgrade to an LED brake light. 6 volt LED brake lights are hard to find. Plus I needed an entire assembly, not just a bulb. So I decided to upgrade to 12 volts.
It is actually a reasonable mod to upgrade to 12 volts. Most of wiring stays the same. The key is getting a new regulator and rectifier. You hook up the two stator lighting outputs to the regulator / rectifier. Your ignition circuit is completely unaffected and remains AC. So now both lighting stator outputs go towards producing 12 volts DC. As a result, you need to replace all lighting to use 12 volts:
Obviously you need to install a 12 volt battery in place of your 6 volt one. You also need to install a ground wire to all lighting. You shouldn't ground just to the frame any more as that is used as the ground for the AC ignition system. Instead, you run a ground from the battery to all the lights. There are really only a few wires you need to splice in to get 12 volts everywhere.
