sonett - speedhut guages and oil pressure switch

I think I am having alternator issues so I wanted to measure the voltage as I am driving around. I decided to get some customized gauges from SpeedHut. As long as I was getting one, I decided to get an oil pressure gauge at the same time. This seemed like a really good idea as soon as my factory oil pressure switch failed and started leaking large amounts of oil as I drove.

SpeedHut allows you to customize the gauges. Using their on-line gauge builder I was able to get gauges that were pretty close to stock. To take to the next level though I had to contact them directly. For an extra fee there were able to.

  • Remove the SpeedHut logo
  • Add a Saab airplane logo that I created
  • Put the numbers outboard of the ring, like the factory VDO guages use.
I am happy with how the new guages look. The text is not as sharp as standard gauges, but it still look good (not great). The design does look as close to the original VDO gauges as I am ever going to get. I also like how the guage is held in place by a plastic nut that screws around the entire gauge. It makes installing them pretty easy.
There are some things I am not a fan of.
  • The backlighting is bright white LEDs. There was no option for a softer yellow color to better match the factory lighting
  • The oil pressure sensor included in the kit is cheaply made. I snapped off one of the wire terminals by applying just barely more than finger tight pressure. (SpeedHut sent me a replacement).
