sonett - pulling transmission, again
The first transmission was completely shot. The cost to rebuild was astronomical as nearly all the internal gears would have to be replaced. More than that, the ring and pinion was shot and a replacement was nowhere to be found. Rebuilding it was out.
I had to pull out the 2nd transmission and send it in to Mark Ashcraft. Thankfully my father was game for helping me muscle the transmission out. Things went quickly with his help, partly because he is very handy, and partly because I only partially put the car back together the first time. Also, last time I accidently evacutated the AC system through a new leak in the condensor. That meant that this time I could simply remove that bulky AC compressor rather than trying to remove the engine with the compressor in place. Whew, what a difference!
I shipped it off to Mark and a few days I had the prognosis. Not good for short. The gears were all rusted, the case was full of water and oil, and the ring and pinion was out of a 2 stroke not a 4 stroke. Ugh. Cost to repair was again astronomical.
Thankfully he had a freshly rebuilt trans on hand. I plan to buy that one and reinstall. Oh well, third times a charm.
