650 - test fit of xs750 standard gas tank
I am tired of the small cruiser look of my 1981 XS650 Special. I want to go more cafe racer. The handlebars were first. Next up is the gas tank. The original gas tank had a slight teardrop shape that I don't care fore anymore.
The Yamaha XS750 Standard gas tank on the other hand has some beautiful lines. It has some slight indentations on the side for your knees and overall the tank looks substantial yet sleek. I also like that the gas filler cap is centered, rather than off-centered like on my current tank.
I got this tank off of ebay. Overall it is actually in great shape. It has less rust in it than my current tank. I did a quick test fit to see what kind of work I will need to do to get it mounted.
There are a couple mounting points for the side covers that will have to be ground off of the frame. The xs750 also uses the front rubber mounting pads on the frame instead of on tank so I will have to rig up a new mounting solution for the front. The xs750 tank is also about an inch longer which makes using the OEM seat tough. Thankfully I am planning on replacing the seat too in the near future. Lastly, the new tank has dual petcocks. My carbs are setup for a single petcock so I will have to cover over one petcock hole.
All in all I am very excited by how the bike looks with this tank. Once I repaint the tank it is going to look great!
